Drybrush Watercolor Illustrations.
I'm working on the illustrations for an Educational Graphic Novel about wildlife -- in this instance Wolves and Wolverines. I'm pretty excited about it and so I wanted to share a bit of it... I cleared it with Rob first as this is NOT strictly Egg Tempera.

The technique here is kind of a mixed bag -- I'm working on 100% Rag Strathmore Illustration Board with Pencil, Ink, Watercolor, Egg Tempera, and Casein.

Most of the work is Dry brush technique with Watercolor -- the Tempera and Casein is primarily used as light accents at the end.

Good work, Jason. I really like the fur on these animals. Nicely done. Will the book be sold to schools only, or the general public?

This will be for both markets although the target audience will be 10-12 year old students... at least as far as the educational element is concerned. That's pretty cool to me because when I was that age I would have loved something like this... maybe it can help get a few kids into nature/wildlife and/or painting -- if it does that then it will be worth it.

One thing that makes this very different from a typical fine-art painting is the need for lots of "dead space" for the text... we don't want the images to feel crowded once the text is in.

Wow! Beautiful work, Jason. I particularly like the wolverine pouncing on the rabbit and the tip of the vulture's(?) wing in the overhead scene. I also love the "dead space" as you call it. Too bad to fill it with text! Let us know when the book is published and available for purchase.
Thanks for posting.

Nicely done Jason. I, too, like the tip of the vulture's wing.

Sorry about that, I lost my internet access and my website a while ago... I relinked the pages at the top and here's a link to a picassa album containing all 40 of the pages:

Thanks for sharing these paintings with us, Jason. They are truly gorgeous! I consider myself honored to have seen the real thing a short while ago.
