Default Psalm 23

Scan didn't capture detail in darks as much as I'd like but this is my most recent tempera... I'm getting ready to do two new ones so crits are desired. Original size 8 x 10

best,
Jason.

Jason,
I really enjoy all the color and texture in this work. Why did you title it Psalm 23? I am familiar with that Psalm but don't recall reading about a pumpkin, ahaha.

Great painting, nice composition, intriguing concept.

Niiice. Especially good detail since it's only 8x10 (inches, yes? That's about 20x25 cm?). The level of detail seems exactly right for its size.

Time elasped was roughly 50 hours from sketch to finish -- and yes it is in fact 8x 10... I didn't use many eggs because I am using sennelier tubed temperas so I only apply the egg as a isolation coat between layers.

Here is a new one, also 8 x 10 also similar time frame.

This was a commisioned work with the customer dictating the color scheme -- critques are welcome.

Best,
Jason.

The tubed tempera works well for the most part but has annoying tendancy to mix when you layer colors, prussian blue and titanium white being particularly bad for this -- my solution was to use straight dilute egg yolk as a form of isolating varnish between layers... I've used this technique on several paintings with no problems.

Also I like to start a panel by covering with dilute egg wash before tranfering my drawing -- it make the transfer stick much better and creates a nicer surface to paint on my initial layers.

BTW I'm not using tubed tempera as my first choice, I recieved a set as a gift and I don't want to spend the money on a dry pigment set up until I use up the tubes... I have used regular tempera for a couple works in a classroom environment and aside from generally wider range of color choices the difference in application for me is minor -- I am using "real gesso" brand panels.

best,
Jason.
