Instead of adding the wax to the applied varnish, mix it into the varnish first. I'd recommend thinning the wax some with solvent, and then mix up to 20% or so to the varnish before applying it. This is the procedure Gamblin recommends with their Gamvar and cold wax products to get a satin finish.

Hi DB,

I've read of combining the two but haven't tried it. I understand that the final look would be not quite gloss nor the look of wax but, as you say, satin. I think I prefer the look of pure wax, but don't know how distinct that actually is from a blend. Do you know if there is a notable difference between a pure wax layer versus a varnish and wax mix?

To me, a thin coat of cold wax looks a little duller, even after buffing.
