Default California Dogface Butterfly on Hornet nest paper..

Here is an interesting trial and error piece I did on Hornet nest paper. It is of a California Dogface Butterfly done in egg tempera.
I wanted to see if it would work and so far it has. I found the abandoned nest while hiking deep in the Trinity Alps Wilderness in northern California. When I got the nest home I pulled it apart and flattened it out. The paper has a very interesting texture. Very hard to paint on. I had to build up many layers to get it to work. It's still holding together. So far so good.
It is 11" x 7"
I just had prints made of this image. They are for sale. They are Giclee and they are beautiful!! My printer captured the color on both images perfectly! The print is done with a white background not the black.

Derek, that's an interesting piece.......we have individual paper wasps building nests in our shed each year and I certainly appreciate how delicate the 'paper' is. Hope it all stays together and good to see experimentation.......

Wow! Fabulous, Derek! Who would have thought. Wasp's nest seem to be pretty durable. My guess is that it will hold up pretty well. If you sized it with rabbitskin glue, you'd have a whole barnyard involved in that painting.
I can't stop staring at it.
Thanks for sharing,
Phil

It's a lovely piece of painting as well. I think the wasps' nest paper makes it stunning.
