I use ET in a contemporary way - very loose and free and experimental with sometimes lots of drawing into the gesso panel too - I love the way that it lends itself to a more contemporary approach and have used it both for totally abstract work and semi abstract - please take a look at for examples.

Kind regards Patricia

Obviously I knew about Kathleen Waterloo, as a Chicago person (actually I'm in a group show with her right now). I'm sorry I don't know more abstract tempera artists. Egg tempera is definitely dominated by realist painters, but it affords plenty of play potential for abstraction. Koo Schadler covered the possibilities excellently.

I'd also like to mention Ben Shahn, who is modern, not contemporary, and not a strict abstractionsist, but still used a lot of very interesting abstract techniques. One I analyzed with some students involved swathes of abstract color which he clearly allowed to dry for quite a while, then painted right over them with solid colors and scratched his design through.
