Default mason stains

Has any one tried any of the ceramic mason stains as pigments? I have used a couple and they seem to work out great. They are definitely permanent and quite finely ground. they are also quite consistent in their dissolve-ability.
Just a thought I'd throw out there.

There's a sculpture supply store near me that sells them. I've tried a few and they're okay. They're roughly 1/2 cup of pigment for @ $4 each. The biggest issue is finding out exactly what some of them are. It took some digging and I'm not positive on some of them.

The "white" the store carries, it turns out, is kaolin; although, Mason also offers a titanium mixed with iron oxide. The "deep brown" appears to be umber and chromium oxide and kinda gritty. The "Delphinium" appears to be PB36 but I can't be certain. The "praseodymium yellow" is PY159, but it and almost all of the others are mixed with silica as a filler.

A few of the ones I bought don't appear on this list, so it looks like they've changed their product line some, meaning I'll just have to guess what those are.

Personally, I bet the cost of the panel, gesso and eggs, exceeds the cost of the pigments, so I would rather paint with Cadmium yellow deep, than something called Tangerine.

Just sayin ...
