Default Help flaking paint

Hello all,
Have not been on in a while. I paint orthodox icons and have been seeing over time that my icons are cracking! Could I be painting too thick or could it be the temp? It is so disappointing because when I am finished it looks great and as the year goes on this happens. Please help?

Your post describes 'cracking' but your title says 'flaking paint' are your paintings on solid wooden panels? (wood panels sometimes split later on under a painting)

Flaking paint is usually due to there not being enough binder in the paint or - more likely - in the gesso primer. What is revealed underneath the areas of paint that are coming off? If you can see the primer directly under the flaking paint (assuming you HAVE applied a primer?) then it is probably the primer that is weak and may need extra glue (rabbit skin or whatever)

If there are underlying paint layers showing below the flaking areas then it is a pigment/binder ratio issue. this is more complicated because of shrinkage that occurs over time with oily paint mediums. Gesso dries quickly through evaporation only and will have virtually zero shrinkage, but needs to be very solid to support the tension of dying oils on its surface.
