Default The Duke of Chin's Army Was Painted in Tempera!

Check out this news story!:

http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/0...-army-egg.html

They analyzed some of the terra cotta figures from the famous Chinese burial site of the Duke of Chin, and discovered that they had been originally painted with egg tempera over a lacquer ground.

For pigment historians like me, the pigments detected were "bone white, lead white, cerussite (which sparkles), quartz, cinnabar, malachite, charcoal black, copper salts [which would have been blues and greens], Chinese purple [a copper silicate with reddish impurities] and azurite." (quote from the article, square brackets are my comments)

That was interesting and good reading, but I can hardly say that I am surprised. Thanks for the link.
