Default Painting on wood for kids

I have a question about painting on wood for kids.

We are teaching a large group of elementary age kids about egg tempera. They will only have 30 minutes to paint. It's mostly about exposing them to the technique not creating masterpieces.

We would like them to paint on wood but preparing the surface is so complicated and time consuming.

Is there an easier way?
Can we maybe just prime them with a paint?

These paintings aren't going to last years anyway, but we want the surface to be easy to work with.

I've done workshops for kids where we painted straight onto acrylic gesso-primed panels. It works just fine for non-permanent practice.
