I'm going to Rome. Can anybody tell me where I can go to see some good examples of Egg Tempera portraits, early Rennaisance or otherwise .

Try: http://www.inromenow.com/site%20templates/Frame_EntertainArt.htm
which lists current art exhibits in Rome.
Virtually all pre-1500 Italian paintings are egg tempera, so any place that shows 15th century ("quattrocento") portraits will have them. (There are very few pre-1400 portraits, to my knowledge, until you get back to the Romans)
Most of the art that I know about in Rome is frescoes or books in the Vatican; it's generally Florence I would go to to see tempera. But I bet there is some there.

is there an equivalent in Rome to the National Portrait Gallery in London?

There's the Vatican Pinacoteca. The other Rome Art museums I can think of (Borghese, Doria Pamphilj) mostly have art that was done after oil supplanted tempera.
I dont think Rome has much tempera, there are probably more early Italian works in the US. I lived in Rome a short time, and although it was before I was into tempera, I dont remember seeing much in the city. Siena and Florence have some though.
