I started painting several large panels last winter using 2-3 layers of egg/oil emulsion. However, since working with this mixture, I have recently gone back to using straight egg tempera as I prefer the simplicity & beauty of this technique. Is it safe to paint over my earlier egg/oil panels again with pure egg tempera? Or is there a risk of variable dyring times & cracking occurring? I have tried to sandpaper the layers down but the layers are pretty well cured (& the panels pretty large). I am also worried about potentially sanding down to the gesso layers. I would prefer to paint over the existing layers if possible.

I think you should finish the paintings with the same egg/oil emulsion they were started with. I would be quite worried about large areas painted with pure ET over emulsion.

Because the pure tempera dries so quickly, it will crack almost immediately in any areas where the under layer is thicker.
