Lisa Jeanne Graf

My artwork is driven by a need to share and connect. I try to communicate what a work means to me as clearly as possible in the work's title.

Often my pieces describe and express different emotional states. In my landscapes trees and rocks express emotions, like a person whose stance and gestures express particular feelings.

My working method tends to be one of exploration. I generally start with a doodle and then bounce off of it until the drawing says it is done. A smaller number of my works start with an idea, which I then illustrate.

Once the drawing is worked out, I move onto the painting. I use egg tempera from tubes. I like the matt quality of paint as well as its’ depth and translucency. It also works well for applying paint in thin layers, and to create varied textures.

The seeds for my works are life events, decorative design, architecture, fantasy stories and all growing things.
