Miranda Gray

Miranda Gray has been painting with egg tempera since 2004.

She went to art school, receiving her BFA (painting/1982) and MFA (ceramic sculpture/1984) at San Francisco Art Institute. From there she stepped out of the fine arts world and into the world of design, where she worked until 2001. She designed textiles in New York, jewelry in Austin, furniture and bronzes in India, all the while painting on the side.

While living in India, she became captivated by Indian miniature painting. She bought the little paintings, collected books on the subject, and watched the painters at their work. At the time she was painting with gouache on paper - a technique that she used in the textile design industry - but she found that these artist could get much finer detail in their work by grinding their own pigments.

When she returned to the States, she started painting with ground pigment and egg yolk, and her paintings shifted drastically. She could finally achieve that exactitude that she was after. Her paintings are currently a mixture of photo-realism, and patterned borders, much like the fabric designs she created in the 80’s.

She now lives in the mountains of Northern New Mexico with her husband and dogs, where she has settled into the wonderful routine of painting and gardening. She continues to create two small paintings each month.
