Dennis Harper
Dennis Harper is a painter, illustrator and teacher currently residing in Athens, GA.
I came to Georgia after many years' employment in New York with a dealer in Old Master paintings. While there at Wildenstein, my interest in quattrocento paintings, and tempera, first became aroused.
Nowadays, I divide my time working as Exhibition Designer at the Georgia Museum of Art (home to Paul Cadmus' beautiful egg tempera, The Playground), teaching painting at the University, doing fresco restoration, plus helping my wife wrangle our two small children and squeezing in the odd minute to make art...
Over the last few years I have been fortunate to be able to teach a couple of seasons in Tuscany, and include tempera painting in the curriculum. This is now my medium of first choice, but the sacks and jars of pigments around the house also find their way into casein, fresco and oil paintings.
I come from a family of artists: my father was a (frustrated) commercial illustrator, my wife is a (reluctantly lapsed) sculptor, my sons are (uninhibited) natural drawers, and I fit somewhere in there amongst the motley crowd.
