Judith Joseph

Judith Joseph has a B.S. in Art from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a painter and calligrapher, and started making Ketubot (illuminated Hebrew marriage contracts) at the age of 17. To date, she has made hundreds of Ketubot on commission and has numerous paintings in public and private collections. She is a resident of the Chicago area and has been awarded Illinois Arts Council Fellowships in 1998 and 2004.

In 1980, an artist-friend introduced her to egg-tempera, and it was love at first stroke of the brush. Egg tempera is her medium of choice for her Ketubah art, as well as many paintings on ragboard and traditionally gessoed panels. She loves the brilliant jewel-like hues and exquisite detail afforded by egg tempera. Judith also creates paintings in acrylic and oil on canvas, as well as works in watercolor. She is a published illustrator and exhibits widely.

Judith has been teaching egg tempera painting classes at the Chicago Botanic Garden since 2003. She also teaches watercolor and an independent painting seminar. She exhibits her paintings and calligraphic works at Gallery 659 in Glencoe, Illinois.
