Personal Statement
I am passionate about art; I see it as a very positive energy force in the world, like music, it has the power to comfort, inspire, energise, soothe or excite, or to provoke and unnerve – art has all these possibilities and for me, provides a never ending journey of discovery.
I currently work from Commercial Square Studios, along with 11 other artists. My time is divided between developing my own work, working on commission pieces and being involved in various community projects. I find this is a very good balance and fully embrace the idea that the artist should be someone who interacts with the community as well as working in a more solitary way in the studio. My latest work involves the use of both acrylics on canvas and egg tempera on gesso panels. Some years ago I was taught the ancient techniques of egg tempera and gilding and I am now revisiting this beautiful medium to produce powerful abstract pieces using the landscape and the human form as inspiration. Although egg tempera has a tradition of being used in a very disciplined way, I find its luminosity, brilliance of colour and lustrous surface, make it an exciting medium for a more contemporary approach. I am also a printmaker working mainly using collagraphs, incorporating natural organic materials.
